the joy of nothing

the joy of nothing

the joy of nothing

Who would have thought that joy, bliss and happiness can come out of nothing?

It’s a universal principle that everything comes from nothing. It’s like prior to receiving a surprise gift, you never had the gift, other than merely a potential gift that you knew nothing about in your conscious awareness.

What precedes the existence of material things are the ideas that bring those objects into existence. Prior to those ideas there was nothing besides their potential existence, or, as Dr Brian L. Lancaster suggests (in his book Approaches to Consciousness, 2004), a “preconscious awareness” of their existence. The same principle applies to each person’s present state – in terms of their emotional feelings and motivation level. In other words, your current state of mind came out of nothing.

It may be argued that there are external factors and neurological impulses that give rise to each thought and emotion, however, since each person’s reaction to any given situation is unique, we know that there aren’t any isolated criteria that cause particular thoughts and feelings. Each person’s current subjective experience arises out of a complex and multi-layered assortment of past programming and present perceptions. What precedes and permeates all measurable means of understanding our moment-by-moment experience of ourselves and our reality is ultimately…Nothing!

Nothing is at the heart of who we are. Yet, this Nothingness is not lifeless. In fact, it seems to be bursting with potential. Almost as if it was a field of consciousness ready to manifest into any state or form. Indeed, this is what appears to happen when ideas pop into our minds and feelings arise into our bodies. In quantum physics terms, we “collapse the wave function to create particles”. Through how we observe and define our experiences we create something (particles) out of nothing (waves of potentiality).

So basically, before we label or judge something, someone, or ourselves, all there is, is Nothing! Through our perceptions we create something out of Nothing. As we engage with the new ideas or triggered reactions, our mind becomes occupied and our attention becomes fixated, which limits our creativity and behavioural flexibility. In the void of Nothingness anything is possible! Allowing ourselves to experience our intrinsic Nothingness, gives us a blanc screen onto which we can consciously create the experience that we would like to have. For this reason, the ASE approach intentionally cultivates an experience of Nothingness (or as close as possible to it) as a starting point.

Interestingly, states like joy, bliss and happiness, as well as a sense of freedom are natural byproducts of entering into Nothingness (or even approaching it). Also, by entering the vicinity of Nothingness, one clears the mind of stressful thoughts and debilitating emotions. It’s truly a wonder-full state to be in.

In this 2 minute video Jevon Dängeli introduces the value of entering into the Nothingness state.
